My first 6 weeks at NJ Rebar

Hello everyone!

My name is Peter Wickström and I started at NJ Rebar as a Site Manager Trainee at the beginning of April. I will be writing this blog from here on a fairly regular basis during my Excellence Program period, sharing my thoughts and experiences while learning about the details of my job.

A little bit about me first. I graduated from the Lappeenranta University of Technology from the program of Industrial Engineering and Management at the beginning of this year. As my major I studied Innovation and Technology Management and my minor was Mechanical Engineering. My previous work experience includes wide range of tasks, mainly from the forest industry. I did my thesis work in the IT industry for risk management. Therefore, rebar and construction business overall are quite new to me.

After graduation, I had several job opportunities to choose from, but my job interview at NJ Rebar seemed most interesting. I was convinced that here I would be able to develop myself and gain experience from various responsibility areas. I also believe that in a smaller company I can make more of an impact and learn more. I also got a strong impression that NJ Rebar is a company that really wants to renew and develop the industry and their own ways of working. The pioneering mindset is very important to me and I personally believe that the construction business will look very different after 5 to 10 years.

Turns out I was right. During my first three weeks, I shared a room with Managing Director Tanja, and had “a first-row seat” to see her in action. It was also very motivating that from early on, I was invited to many meetings and projects including the introduction of electronic signatures, the testing of a work safety application, and the Lean development project. Based on everything I have tried to understand the big picture and what is happening in the company.

After office training period I have spent more and more time at construction sites. I have visited the sites with foremen and site managers to learn, but I have also been “doing real work” i.e iron fitting with the hook in my hand. I have been very impressed by the work ethics of our Polish employees and by their positive attitude even it’s been raining cats and dogs.

In a nutshell, after only 6 weeks in the job, I have been able to work with diverse responsibilities, seen company's operations from many different angles and gotten familiar with a variety of personalities. There is still a lot to be learned, but things are looking promising as the (hopefully sunny) summer is just around the corner!
